TomTom Car Kit Works With iPhone 4... In Australia

September 8, 2010
When iPhones with GPS debuted in 2008, it led to the release of thousands of apps for the young and old alike. For travelers, it gave us access to turn-by-turn GPS navigation, without having to buy a dedicated GPS system. One of the best of these apps is the one developed by TomTom. Since its release, the app has been updated often and it is certainly worth the current price of $39.99. However, when the iPhone 4 was released in June, TomTom users were left with a dilemma. Since the newest iPhone is shaped differently than the iPhone 3G or 3GS, current owners couldn't use their existing TomTom iPhone Car Kit with their new iPhone. In fact, some users resorted to using good old-fashioned tape to get the job done, which does appear to work very well.

However, it looks like TomTom has found a solution of its own. Instead of creating an entirely new Car Kit, TomTom has simply included an "iPhone 4 Adapter" with its product. To me, this looks like nothing more than a strip of black plastic, but if it does the trick, that is great. Unfortunately, it is not available as a separate item. Therefore, existing Car Kit users are out of luck, unless they want to purchase the Kit all over again! Therefore, the tape idea might still be a good one for existing users! Regrettably, TomTom does not appear to be offering this adapter in the U.S. In fact, if you shop for the Car Kit within the company's U.S. site, you see this warning: "Not recommended for iPhone 4" The iPhone 4 adapter is only advertised on the company's Australian website, although I would assume that it will be coming to other countries soon. The TomTom app is available in the App Store.
