Video: Newton OS Emulated On iOS

September 20, 2010
Remember the Apple Newton? If you do, you'll find this really interesting: TUAW found some clever folks who've actually managed to fully emulate the Newton OS... on iOS. Newton OS, was the mobile operating system developed by Apple to power its now defunct handheld/tablet device called the Newton. The trick is made possible through an emulator, called Einstein. While its performance is slow, and the OS is far from impressive by iOS standards, it's still quite a technical achievement. Check it out:

A very interesting point is that Newton OS actually comes with a handwriting recognition feature. Something that still hasn't made it to iOS, and many users would definitely love to use. It's open-source, and available here if you want to compile it on your own. It has also been submitted to the App Store, but its chances of getting approved are, probably very slim.
