New AT&T App Proves They Recycle And You Should Too

Sure, 3G is still not available everywhere on its network. And yes, it is probably going to lose its exclusivity contract to sell the iPhone which might hurt its bottom line. But, these must be uneventful times at AT&T, if they had time to create the Eco-App. Recently released in the App Store, the app’s purpose, according to AT&T, is “helping youth more easily connect with initiatives aimed at minimizing our environmental impact in local communities nationwide.” Features include:

Locate recycling facilities in their local area

Better understand the environmental benefits of paperless billing

Securely contribute funding to the Arbor Day Foundation, which will plant a tree in the contributor’s honor

Receive tips and updates on local events focused on our environment

The app supports AT&T’s broader initiative – the “One Million Eco Challenge” – a program designed to drive greater environmental awareness among youth and to encourage more energy-efficient practices every day.

These are noble goals. And yes, Dallas, Texas-based AT&T is a large company with many different departments. So it can release apps such as this and still worry about its other issues. Besides, what's bigger than maintaining our environment? Still, when I think of eco-friendly companies, AT&T doesn’t come to mind. Not with thousands of old smartphones being thrown away each year. But, perhaps that is the point. By releasing this app, AT&T is showing the world that they support the environment. The app also shows younger members of our society how they can do the same thing. But, I'm still scratching my head with this one. The Eco-App is available for free in the App Store for the iPhone/iPod touch.
