AT&T Reports 5.2 Million iPhone Activations

October 22, 2010

Good news for both AT&T and Apple for the third quarter of 2010. AT&T received a boost this quarter through the 5.2 million iPhone activations, up from the previous quarterly record of 3.2 million. Of the 5.2 million activations, 24% of them were reportedly new subscribers. And, that's just the phones that we're talking about. In addition, 321,000 prepaid subscribers chose AT&T service, most likely to fuel their iPads. The previous year, AT&T reported a loss of about 176,000 prepaid subscribers.

This year, AT&T gained 2.6 million net subscribers, in all likelihood due to consumers who are running Apple iDevices. And, 40% of the gross subscriber additions were motivated to choose AT&T because of the iPhone. Any way you look at the numbers, Apple plays a big part in AT&T's quarterly totals. Which also proves that partnering with Apple is a positive any way you look at it. Who knows what the future holds, as Apple may expand their horizons with other carriers, like Verizon Wireless. Do you think that allowing the iPhone to be sold through more carriers will hurt AT&T's bottom line? Leave a comment below.
