Death Of Its Smartphone Might Mean Garmin Is Ready To Join Apps Party

October 27, 2010
GPS driving devices were in vogue at the beginning of this century. However, with the advent of the iPhone, and its GPS capabilities, things changed. GPS device makers learned a while ago that they also needed to make driving apps for the iPhone. Most complied. But, not Garmin. Olathe, Kansas-based Garmin develops consumer, aviation and marine technologies using GPS. In 2009, when competitors like TomTom began producing their own iPhone apps, Garmin went in a different direction. Through a partnership with ASUS, they began producing their own location-specific cell phones. Reviews for the Garmin-ASUS smartphones were mostly negative. In January, Garmin’s partnership with ASUS will end. Now comes word that the company is most likely ready to join the party and release its own Garmin navigation app in the App Store. According to Gizmodo:
iPhone and BlackBerry users can expect to see a navigation app from Garmin soon, though how soon is now? I do not know.
With the number of GPS navigation apps available in the App Store constantly growing, Garmin might be joining the party too late. Still, for Garmin users this is good news.
