QuickAdvice: Movie Vault - An Entire Library of Cult Classics In Your Pocket
Movie Vault - Watch Great Classic Movies ($2.99) by Fling Soft LLC is a repository of classic cult B movies for your streaming pleasure on the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Earlier on, I reviewed Movie Vault for iPad. Recently, the developers released the iPhone version of the app, and it is pretty cool.
When the app is first launched, the app will begin to download the current catalog of movie listings in various categories. Depending on your data connection at the time, this initial process may take a few minutes at most.
Once it's done though, you can begin viewing the various cult classics by category using the arrows at the top corner. There is a variety of movie titles in each of the 12 categories, and each movie title is presented by an icon that represents a DVD case and are placed on faux wooden bookshelves. Very slick UI for finding your way through movies.
If you select a movie, it will have a popup box with some information about the movie in it, such as director, date, and actors. Hit the Watch Movie button and it will begin streaming the movie right to your iPhone.
The playback can be viewed in portrait or landscape (as the whole app, actually), and has buttons to rewind 30 seconds and pause. There's a scrubber for volume adjustment and skipping around in the movie.
While I watched movies, the playback is pretty solid - no skipping or buffering. But that would also depend on the type of connection you're on as well. It's watchable on 3G, but make sure you're getting good reception.
Movie Vault has a search function to allow you to look for any cult movies you may have an urge to watch. The app doesn't include every movie, but it has a good selection of cult b-movies, with a catalog that will be updated every now and then.
Another great thing about the app is that it supports multitasking. So you can pause a movie, exit the app, and come back and find your movie right where you left it. Even if you were just browsing movies, you will find yourself in the same spot of browsing as you were before closing the app.
If you like these types of movies, and wanted the iPad version but didn't have an iPad, now is your time to pick this up! For $3, you get quite a selection of movies to keep you entertained for hours.
