Review: Ninja Chicken 2 - The Pigs Are Coming!

October 11, 2010

Overview

Ninja Chicken 2 is a fun point defense shooter by the Kiongzhong Corporation where you defend your ninja chicken from the invading pig army. It's a fun game with a very unique and funny idea to say the least.

Features

Ninja Chicken 2 features fast paced shooting action, three different modes, each with 20 waves, many items and ammo types to use and Game Center and Openfeint support. Ninja Chicken 2 features three game modes, each with 20 waves to survive. Tilt mode works by tilting the idevice to move your gun back and forth. The gun fires automatically. Six cannons mode features a battery of six cannons to control. You tap a cannon to move to it and then tap it to fire. You must quickly switch between each cannon to take out each oncoming enemy. Manual mode features one canon you control directly by touching and dragging it. Holding it also causes it to fire.

The Good

Ninjas Chicken 2 is a fast paced defensive shooter game. You control one or six cannon on top of a wall at the bottom of the screen. From the top of the screen huge armies of  swine assault you in droves. If they manage to get past your hail of fire and attack the wall they damage it and if its destroyed you lose the game. To stop them  you use your weapons and a collection of different ammo types to shock, freeze or blast them into tiny pieces. The enemy pig army has many funny kinds of troops to keep the game interesting, featuring basic foot soldiers, who run up to your wall and charge it to cause damage, faster pig warriors on unicycles, bazooka pigs that use rockets to damage it from a distance and ninja pigs that phase out of the way of your shots and appear elsewhere. They also come in different colors, indicating their strength and how many shots they can take. You also have access to many types of ammo, such as piercing missiles that can kill all pigs in a line, electrical shells to zap them into nothingness, freezing shots to slow them down and rapid fire and trishot shells to rain projectile hell on your piggish foes. Each mode starts off quite easy, as long as you are accurate, but soon you need to start deciding which enemies to shoot first and predicting which projectiles or enemies will reach your wall to decide who gets priority to be blown apart first. Ninja Chicken 2 looks great, very colorful and bright. The game has a distinct cartoony style and is nicely detailed. When pigs die they die differently depending on what sort of troop they are and there are also stun animations for being hit, such as as turning black and flinching so you can gauge how long it will be before they can move again. Weaponry also looks nice, from the blue crackle of the shock shells to the black shower of the trishot shells. The game also sounds great. There are different sounds for hitting and killing pigs and each weapon sounds very different. Each mode has its own music and all of the tracks are very nice to listen to. It's just a shame they aren't longer as they suit the game very well. Kiongzhong Corporation is also planning an update including a verses mode, where one player controls the chicken and the other the pigs. The pig player has to choose where to put his pigs to reach the chicken player's wall while the chicken player defends it. This should make for a fun time when its released.

The Bad

There is no real bad side to Ninja Chicken 2. The six cannons mode can feel somewhat unwieldy at times, but that's about it.

The Verdict

Ninja Chicken 2 is a very enjoyable, addictive game with a highly amusing and original premise and its great for short bursts or to play for ages. Its three game modes and Game Center integration give it longevity and its well done graphics and sound top off the package. Highly recommended!
