WeRule Moves Users Over To WeRule Quests - Adds Quests & Retina Support

October 27, 2010
For all of the WeRule fans out there, a significant update is now available. If you launch WeRule on the iPhone, iPod, or iPad today, you will be greeted with the message “Update Required. Please download the latest version from the app store.” Once you select upgrade, you'll be taken to the page to download a new, renamed version of the app called: “We Rule Quests.” The app is still not universal so you will need to download an iPhone version as well as an iPad version. Just for kicks I decided to see what would happen if I selected “cancel.” It appears that it will simply try to connect to the WeRule servers, but fails. The original WeRule apps are now dead and in place are the new "WeRule Quests" apps.  For now, the original apps are still available for download and we expect those to be pulled very soon.

The new app does contains a few new things including: quests, optimizations, and Retina display support. As a WeRule player I was curious about the quests. The simple answer is that you are charged with the task of finding a combination of different stores to buy things from. My first quest is searching for my lost pig. To accomplish the quest I need to purchase things from the stable, the butcher shop, and the barn. The developers of the app promise a new quest every week. A question that I have for the makers of this app: Why did you move users to a different app? Couldn't this have been achieved through a regular software update? In the past the developers have urged users to download and use WeRule GOLD and WeRule RED which were there simply to help WeRule gain more visibility in the App Store. If you try to play WeRule GOLD or RED you will be greeted with that same upgrade dialog. It appears the App Store now has five apps (including the iPad) that simply point to the WeRule Quests app! WeRule RED never made its way to the iPad. The functionality added to this new app could have easily been added to the original app and made the upgrade process much less confusing.  If I were a novice user I might also be concerned that I was being forced to start all over again. Nevertheless, the new features are still welcome. Should Apple have rejected WeRule Quests and told the makers to simply add this functionality to the original app? I’m a big WeRule addict, and I am annoyed by things like this. Let me know what you think in the comments below.
