Yahoo Adds Video Calling Capabilities To Its iPhone Messenger App
October 12, 2010
As we previously reported, Yahoo! has updated its iPhone messenger app with some extensive video conferencing capabilities.
The Yahoo! Messenger app now allows you to, in addition to instant messaging on the Yahoo! network, place FaceTime-like video calls. These calls can be between two mobile devices (including iOS, of course), and even between two different platforms like iOS and Android.
Also, it reportedly allows you to place video calls between desktop computers and iOS devices, something we were very excited about. However, we have not yet been able to make it work. We're not sure what the problem is, but we're hearing the desktop to mobile video call feature might only work if you're running the desktop client on Windows.
It works over both 3G and Wi-Fi, and while the quality is not as good as FaceTime, it's still a very interesting addition. We're still hoping they can fix this desktop to mobile video issue, as this was meant to be the highlight of the service. Not being able to make it work so far has been a big disappointment.
Anyway, give it a try, as it's free. Then tell us what you think!
