Dragon's Lair HD Takes Us Back In Time
November 4, 2010
Believe it or not, there once was a time when video game playing meant going to the local arcade. For those of us that grew up in the 1980s, it also meant Dragon’s Lair, which was released in 1983. Now, this game remembered by many of us, is available for the iPad.
Originally created by the now defunct Cinematronics, Dragon’s Lair was ahead of its time. It featured animation created by former Disney animator Don Bluth using laserdisc technology. At the time, most video games were created using a series of bitmaps which appeared choppy. This made the characters of Dragon’s Lair look almost real by comparison.
Dragon’s Lair HD, like its iPhone/iPod touch cousin, tells the story of the valiant knight Dirk the Darling. His quest is to rescue the beautiful Princess Daphne from the lair of Singe, a fire-breathing dragon who lurks in an evil castle.
Released by Electronic Arts, Dragon’s Lair HD has not been updated for the 21st century. The app is the exact same game found in the arcades of yesteryear. But, this is by design and surely what will drive its appeal in the App Store.
Best of all, rather than paying $1 for each game (like we did as teenagers), the app is available today for just $4.99.
