QuickAdvice: Capture The Action With Burst Mode - Plus, Win A Promo Code!

Burst Mode by Cogitap Software icon

Burst Mode ($1.99) by Cogitap Software captures lightning fast action with speed and precision. Never miss another moment - the exact nanosecond the baseball bat strikes the ball, the candles being blown out on the birthday cake, a runner crossing the finish line. Record and self-critique your golf swing or your dance number. Capture the flight of a butterfly or a baby taking those first wobbly steps.

Start by going into the app’s settings. If you want a self-timer, you can set it for 3, 5, or 10 seconds. Next, set your burst speed (the number of frames to be captured every second): 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15, or 24 bursts per second. Finally, set the number of frames you’d like to take: 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, or 400. Tap “Done” and start shooting.

Tap the camera button and clickclickclickclick - you have a whole lotta photos! I couldn’t believe how fast it took so many pictures. Now, the maximum may be 400, but in actuality you don’t usually get that many. The first time I tried, I got about 150, but after I closed all the apps that were running in the background, I captured 265. In practice, I can’t imagine when you’d need more than 100 or so pictures at once, but if you expect 400 every time, you may be disappointed. Cogitap’s website says a freshly booted device will get the full number.

So, now you have a bunch of pictures. Tap one to see it close up. Press “play” to start a slide show, if you want. Save the individual photos you like. Or go back to the frame roll where you can see all the pictures at once as thumbnails. From there, you can tap the “send” icon. Select as many photos as you like, and then you get more options, as seen in the icons across the bottom.

Tap the disk icon to save all selected photos to your camera roll. Tap box/window icon to create a photo sequence, something like what you’d get from a photo booth, except you can create a composition with up to 12 photos. Tap the three-line icon to stack the photos, meaning all the photos you selected will be layered on top of one another. The result is a simulated long exposure shot. And of course, a tap on the trash icon will delete the selected photos.

3GS users are limited to 200 frames at 15 frames per second, which for most people, will be plenty. 3G users are out of luck on this one. Of course, when you are taking pictures this fast, you will lose some resolution on each shot. Still, on my iPhone 4, the results were impressive.

Still not convinced to buy this app? Try out the free version (the number of frames and burst speed will be limited). Or, win one of five promo codes! Simply comment below and tell me: what would you use this app to capture? Contest ends November 6, 2:00 p.m. EDT. Must have a US iTunes account to redeem. Good luck!
