Diptic ($1.99) by Peak Systems is an elegant niche app for photographers. This universal app allows you to place two to four photos in a single frame. The clean user interface is attractive, intuitive, and easy to use.

A picture speaks a thousand words, and Diptic lends itself to storytelling. I frequently use it show Before and After pictures to demonstrate the effects of various photography apps. You can use it like a photo booth -- take your pictures in any app and then put them together in Diptic. Or, like the above photo, showcase a life within a single frame. Create your story with up to four photos in nineteen different layouts.

Open the app and choose your layout. Take photos in-app or use photos from your photo library. If you’re using photos you’ve already taken, tap Select, and then tap each spot to choose a photo. Two-finger zoom to get each photo the size you need. Change your layout at any time, or move the photos around to the desired spots. If you want to start over, you can clear out the photos by tapping Clear.

If you like, you can play around with it some more for extra artistic effects. Tap Transform if you wish to rotate individual photos 90 degrees or flip them to a mirror images. You can adjust the Brightness, Contrast, and Hue for each individual photo if you tap Effects. Additionally, you can adjust the border -- make it thinner or thicker and turn it any color of the rainbow.

Once you have completed your photo, hit the Export icon, where you’ll have the option to save to camera roll or email.

Like many popular photography apps, there is a Flickr community where photographers can share their Diptic creativity. You can access Diptic’s Flickr community directly from the app, but you can also check it out now to see what photographers are doing with this app: www.flicker.com/groups/Diptic.

I would like to see more shapes in future updates -- right now, all of the layouts are square. The developer tells me the next update will include higher resolution saving and some optional functionality they’re really excited about. In my opinion, this is an essential app for iPhoneographers to display their work in a compelling way.
