FX Photo Studio ($2.99) by MacPhun LLC is an incredible photo effect and filter app. There are 171 filters but that is not a limitation -- you can mix and match and layer the filters for endless effects. In addition, you can fine tune each of the filters to control the effects with precision. And that’s not all -- you also get basic essential editing tools, such as crop, flip, brighten, rotate, and more.

Start by uploading or taking a photo. At the bottom left, you’ll see a crop (scissors) icon. You can do a straight crop or rotate the crop area as desired. When you have finished, tap Done to go back to the main screen. The arrow box icon at the bottom middle allows you to rotate your entire photo as desired. The half circle icon on the bottom right is for Gamma, or brightness.

And now, the fun part: tap the fx icon to play with the effects! Here you’ll find the list of 171 effects. Of course you’ll see plenty of great effects you’ve seen in other apps, such as Night Vision, Tilt Shift, Brush Stroke, Vintage, Vignette, Cross Process, and more. But you’ll also find more unusual ones, such as Color Explosion, Butterflies, Fire, Scary Face, Old TV, Lightning, and Stardust Frame.

View them all in a list or tap Categories at the bottom to put them into 19 categories such as Art, Blur, Color Fantasy, Distortion, Frames, Groovy Lo-Fi, Grunge, Image Correction, and SFX. In addition, there are a few extra categories available for in-app purchase. Tap All Effects to see them back in list form. Tap the star next to each effect that you want to put in your Favorites file.

Not sure which filter to try? Tap the dice icon in the top right for random selections. You’ll notice that for every effect, there is an “amount” slider so you can adjust how intense you’d like the effect to be.

Want to mix and match? Just go ahead and layer on as many filters as you like. When you find that perfect combination, just tap Presets and then +Add New. Give it a descriptive name if you like. Now you can apply this combo you created onto any photo.

Tap Save when you’ve completed your alterations and save the photo to your Photo Album, Documents, or Clipboard. Share your creations via Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, or Mail.

This is a photography app well worth the investment. There are virtually endless options for editing and filtering your photos. Fine-tune and combine the effects to your heart’s delight. You will not soon tire of FX Photo Studio.
