QuickAdvice: Learn More About The Bible With The Good News Bible

The app is comprised of fifteen different sections. The first one in the table of contents is The Bible. Start at the very beginning (Genesis, which is what I did, as you can see in my screenshots) or choose the specific book, chapter, and verse you’d like to examine. Scroll through choices from Old Testament or New Testament or Both; Alphabetical or Regular order. Open the book you have selected, and the first thing you get is a summary of the entire book. Next is an outline of contents, chapter by chapter. Finally, you get the chapter itself. It is written in plain English; dispensing with all the “thee”s and “thou shalt”s. Scroll through the entire book, chapter by chapter, or jump ahead using the slider at the bottom. Tap the settings icon in the bottom left hand corner for more options. Change the background from the colorful default to sepia or white. Take and save notes on particular books. Adjust the font size.

Back to the main menu, tap Timeline for a colorful timeline of all of the major stories and people of the Bible. This is a great visual. If you studied Bible, you know it can get confusing trying to remember what happened in what order. Anywhere on the timeline, you can tap the green arrow for more detail. For example, I tapped “Moses”. I got a brief description of who he was, why he is important to the overarching story, and a list of each chapter and verse where he is discussed. The third section, Who’s Who, is just what it sounds like. It’s simply an alphabetical list of every major character in the Bible. Tap on a name, and get the same information as in the previous section.

About the Bible is a brief history and discussion of the Bible itself, with subheadings such as, “Six myths about the Bible” and “What do I do with the Bible?”. Introductory Reading Plan is kind of a lesson plan for studying the Bible. Life Issues tells you what the Christian view is on many contemporary issues. Quiz is divided into two sections: Character Quiz and Theme Quiz. Within each one, you’ll find many multiple choice, timed quizzes to take. Maps contains four maps: World of the Bible, New Testament Israel, Old Testament Israel, and Paul’s Journeys. Dictionary is self-explanatory, as are Miracles of Jesus and Parables of Jesus. I Need Help contains a list of common problems that people have, such as Anger, Loneliness, and Poverty, and offers biblical inspiration to deal with them. Passages for Occasions lists verses appropriate for sad occasions such as Bereavement and happy ones such as Wedding Day. Prayers From Bible is just what it sounds like. Finally, tap Inspiration for “words to encourage, soothe, reassure, and inspire”.
