Video Splash ($0.99) by Janos Barkai allows you to turn your videos into black-and-white while keeping one object in color. What apps like Color Splash and Color Blast do for photographs, Video Splash does for videos. But does it work as well as the photo apps?

It’s not perfect. But it is a fun app to play around with nonetheless. Simply open up the app and choose one of the videos from your camera roll. Tap the dropper icon on the bottom left corner, then tap on the item you want to retain its color. In this case, I tapped on my dog’s bandana. Now you can tap on the bottom center slider icon to fiddle with the color and the tolerance. Less tolerance means your entire object may not be in color, while more tolerance means you may have some bleed-through into other parts of the movie. Try to find just the right spot for the look you desire. As you can see in my movie, I may have put the tolerance a little bit high, because there is a little bleed-through, but I wanted to make sure the bandana was fully in color. The developer is working on an update to eliminate this bleed-through, but for best results you’ll want to film under ideal lighting situations (which I did not).

If you want to change which object to keep in color, simply slide your finger along the rainbow. For example, if you slide it over to red, any red objects will stay in color. Tap the folder icon on the bottom right to save your video or load a new one.

The filter is applied at full resolution and can be previewed on any frame of the video. Processing time is fairly long, but not as long as some other video apps. I edited my “before” and “after” videos into one continuous movie below. I am obviously not a videographer, and this is my first attempt at a Video Splash movie. See for yourself - if you like the effect, then you’ll definitely want to get this app.

Luckily for you, I have five promo codes to give away. Simply comment below if you would like a shot at one of them. Tell me what you’d like to splash with Video Splash! You must have a US iTunes account to redeem. Contest ends on November 26 at 2:00 p.m. EST. Good luck!
