UPDATE: For Men Too! Smartphone Gloves For The Female iDevice Enthusiast
November 12, 2010
Looking for a gift for the tech-savvy lady in your life? Or are YOU the tech-savvy woman who suffers iDevice withdrawal in the winter months? Now there is a glove for that, and on top of that, the gloves are easy to find and reasonably priced.
You can’t even answer a smart phone with regular gloves on. Last winter, I fumbled with removing my gloves every time my iPhone rang. I experimented with fingerless gloves and flip-open mittens and froze my fingertips. Going gloveless is just not an option in the Northern U.S. and other cold climates. I recently started seeing “smartphone gloves” in stores, but they were specialty boutiques with hefty price tags, and truthfully, weren’t all that comfortable or effective.
Now, at Walmart, you can get smartphone gloves for less than $13! They are made by Isotoner, and look just like regular gloves with some extra stitching on the thumbs and index fingers. The are comfortable, warm, reasonably priced, and come in a variety of pretty colors, but do they work?
In a word, yes. Tapping, scrolling, and swiping works great. I would not recommend trying to type lengthy emails with these gloves on - they are gloves, after all, and unless your fingers are extremely long, there will be enough extra fabric after your fingertips end to make typing a bit awkward. But you can easily answer your phone, get the latest news, and even play a game if it doesn’t require too much dexterity and speed. They’re not perfect, but they are the best option I have found so far. You can purchase them in your local Walmart or online right here. I have not seen a men’s version yet in stores, but I would imagine they can’t be far behind.
UPDATE: A representative from Isotoner contacted me to tell me they do indeed make a men's version of the smartphone gloves. You can find them at JC Penney or on Isotoner's website.
