Washington Post App For iPad Content Is Free, For Now

November 8, 2010
Newspaper publishers are still trying to figure out how to best present their content on the iPad. Case in point: the new Washington Post for iPad app. While the actual app is free, the content presented is not. At least not in the long-term. Users are asked to login to their washingtonpost.com account or create a new one. From there, users are given full access to the app’s content through February 15, 2011. After that date users will be asked to pay a monthly fee to keep reading. Prices have not been announced yet. The app itself is packed full of information. Topics range from national news, politics, opinion, business, sports, entertainment and food. Each article is easy to read. Plus, the app is updated often, as current events develop. You can even select articles to “read later” for offline reading. This is a nice touch. The app does not include a Metro section which might upset DC locals.

Whether users will want to pay for content after February remains to be seen. The New York Times is offering a similar “free for now” concept for its iPad app. The Wall Street Journal, on the other hand, offers no such trial, but does give its app content out for free to its print or web customers. Download the Washington Post for iPad app today in the App Store.
