New 8mm Vintage Camera App Takes Your Videos Back In Time

December 28, 2010
Cameras, and the pictures they take are constantly improving. However, many of us enjoy converting those pictures into a style from yesteryear. Apps like Hipstamatic and SwankoLab include features that make today’s pictures look like they were taken in the 1970s or even earlier. Now, a new app does the same for live videos. Created by Nexvio, the 8mm Vintage Camera app for the iPhone is like a step back in time. Users are able to mix and match films and lenses to create unique videos that look like they were taken decades ago. Changes are live; meaning you see the techniques using a viewfinder as a video is being taken.

The app includes 25 timeless retro looks, using the following techniques:
  • Films – 5 grainy, discolored, dusted and aged films from different eras
  • Lenses – 5 lenses bundled including Clear, Flickering Frame, Spotlight, Light Leak, and Color Fringing
  • Videos can be saved to the Camera Roll, e-mail, or shared on YouTube. Plus, you can use either of your iPhone's cameras. Here is a video:

This is an amazing app and well worth its price of $1.99. One limitation, however, could be a deal breaker for some. The app does not allow you to edit existing videos. So those birthday videos you took last month cannot be edited using the app. This would be a great feature to add in a future release. The 8mm Vintage Camera app is available in the App Store.
