Review: Girl vs Zombies - Dead And Loving It!

December 23, 2010

Overview

Girl vs Zombies stars you as the titular girl, trying to escape from a city after the dead rise from their graves. Along the way you'll encounter hundreds of the rotting dead and other horrors.

Features

Girl vs Zombies HD features a good number of distinct playstyles, imaginative enemies, great graphics and tense music.

The Good

Girl vs Zombies is another of the recent glut of zombie games available on ios. While they have been plenty of them, the old thrill of killing zombies never seems to fade and running in terror from them, as they breathe acid in your direction is usually pretty thrilling too. Girl vs Zombies is great value for money, because it brings a  number of playstyles to the table, rather than simply having every level be more of the same. At first you'll be dodging a single zombie, as he dives at you in a quest for your brains, next you'll be navigating your way past hordes of the dead in your car and then suddenly you're avoiding acid puke streams, as you sprint down the street.  The gameplay in Girl vs Zombies is constantly changing and it really gives the game a feeling of a connected journey, rather than simply a series of more difficult levels; you're escaping from a city, not doing the same thing over and over. This feeling of embarking on a journey is enhanced by short story scenes before each level. When you die there is also a screen with a picture showing how you died, which is a cool touch. Controlling the action couldn't be easier, as you simply tap and hold on the girl and drag your finger to move her as quickly or as slowly as you like. Some games like the running and car based sections have you tilting the iPad up and down to move, which is much more difficult than the standard controls and also forces you to get in a comfortable position where you can tilt the iPad properly. The game's multiple playstyles gives the game a good amount of longevity, as each section feels very different to the last and the snappy controls and dead simple gameplay makes the game fun and addictive. Game Center integration also adds to the fun, as there are plenty of achievements, some of which are pretty taxing to complete. Girl vs Zombies has a great stand out visual style. It is best described as a dark cartoon, featuring lots of dark colors and rough textures, mixed with cartoony characters and great animations. The game looks great and very distinct. It also runs silky smooth and each level looks different. The sound is equally well done. The music is great, ranging from weird zombie influenced surf music, to tense drum filled tracks and it really adds to the game's feel. The game also features well done sound and there are plenty of moans, groans and gasps like any good horror game should have.

The Bad

The stages with tilt controls can be very frustrating. The second part of the sewer level and the second driving level are annoying, as you're forced to use the tilt controls and you'll die many, MANY times. Both of them also lack midway restart points, when the first part of the sewers, a MUCH easier level had one. Thankfully not many stages use tilt controls, so it doesn't  get in the way too much.

The Verdict

Girl vs Zombies is a fun, varied game, available for a bargain price. If you're in the market for a simple, great looking action game for your iOS device and don't mind some pretty tough levels and sightly annoying controls, picking up this app is a no brainier.
