Review: Super Blast 2 - Blastin' Upwards All Over Again

December 6, 2010

Overview

It's time to blast space creeps all over again in Super Blast 2 the sequel to the arcade top down shoot 'em up. Space creeps come flying at you from above, and you can't let them get past you. The original was just an endless game, but the sequel adds boss battles as well as three difficulties to play through.

Features

Each of the three difficulty modes have different creeps and bosses to face, with 12 creeps in total with some that fire back at you. You also have a health meter, and three super blasts, and there are more weapon power-ups dropping from the sky. When you collect three stars there is super hero mode, and OpenFeint and Game Center are included for high scores and achievements.

The Good

The game isn't called arcade action for nothing as there is a constant stream of enemies and bullet fire on screen. The game has a simple mechanic as you just tilt, and there is auto fire, and one tap deploys the super blast. The included boss battles are a nice change of pace to the flow of simpler enemies. The bosses have you dodging their fire while still trying to fire upon them, and there is a very big meter to deplete to finally destroy them. There is a different boss for each difficulty so you'll want to play each difficulty to face them all. The super blasts help a lot when an enemy looks like it will slip by, and the super hero mode is a really great upgrade on top of all the weapon upgrades that come often. Super Blast 2 has a similar design as the original, and that's a good thing. Now there is retina quality graphics, and the creature design and varying backgrounds are even more detailed. The weapon fire and enemy explosions are well done, and there is a deluxe soundtrack to go with the blasting action.

The Bad

The game doesn't vary much from the original which was relatively simplistic in its own right. There are boss battles, but there is no type of campaign, just bosses inserted in the middle of an endless run. There are three difficulties meaning three different endless runs as compared to only one in the original. It would be great if there were checkpoints along the way rather than redrafting from the beginning each time you lose. It would be nice to start at different intervals after beating a boss, but that has no effect in the game. Overall the game feels too easy as your character fires automatically, and there is an overload of bullets streaming from your guns. There are all kinds of weapons to devastate the enemies, and only one or two creeps plus the bosses fire back at you. The game lulls you to sleep in a sense of security from the simpleness, and then you lose when you stop paying attention. You can take a lot of damage with regenerating health, but if one creep gets past its game over which just isn't balanced well. The game is repetitive as all you really do is tilt as the game takes care of everything else. Once you've played a couple times you won't see anything new, and there is nothing to keep you coming back to the game.

The Verdict

Super Blast 2 is similar to the original, and doesn't introduce much for the sequel which is disappointing. The game is nicely designed, but it's far too simple in gameplay and in scope. There isn't very much content, and the boss battles don't change the game from still just being endless and repetitive. Super Blast 2 is not worth picking up with many better games available.
