Is Silverlight 5 Going To Be A Game Changer For Developers?

December 7, 2010
Imagine webapps that work on both the iPhone/iPod touch and Windows Phone 7 devices. This could become a reality thanks to Microsoft’s newest version of its runtime and development platform, Silverlight. In what could be a sign of what is coming in 2011, the Redmond, Washington-based company has unveiled Silverlight 5. According to MacStories, it promises to allow support on iOS devices. Silverlight competes directly with HTML5 and Flash. Its success will be tied directly to how many developers are willing to use the platform in creating new products. Knowing this, we really don’t know how successful it would be on iOS devices. Microsoft will have to face an Apple community which has traditionally been reluctant to accept anything from the folks in Redmond. Announced at the Silverlight Firestarter event on December 2, the Silverlight 5 beta will be released to developers in early 2011. A public release is expected later in the year.
