Coverage? App Puts Cellular Carriers To The Test
January 10, 2011
Apple is likely to end AT&T’s exclusive contract for the iPhone tomorrow. With it the Verizon vs. AT&T coverage wars will begin again since users will have a choice of carriers when buying Apple’s top selling smart phone.
But, who offers the best coverage area, AT&T or Verizon?
That question is usually best answered by where you live, as well as locations you frequently travel to.
The new Coverage? app by Two Steps Beyond answers this question. It provides aerial views of cellular coverage across the United States for each of the top carriers: AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon.
The coverage maps include urban and rural areas. Plus, Coverage? shows 3G, 2G, and roaming areas as separate map overlays.
The app is priced at $1.99 and works on both the iPhone/iPod touch and iPad.
I’m not sure the price is right. The same coverage maps are readily available online and at retail stores for free. Plus, does an AT&T customer living in a poor coverage area really need to be reminded that someone else’s coverage on Verizon is better? Or, that AT&T's 3G network is still pretty thin?
