Earth Defense Force: A Classic SNES Shooter Now Available For iPhone
January 17, 2011
Earth Defense Force, the classic horizontal shoot 'em up first published in the early '90s by JALECO LTD., is now available in the App Store thanks to iOS developer and publisher DotEmu, which specializes in bringing retro games back to life.
The game allows you to strap into a recently developed spaceship known as the "XA-1" and take the fight to the evil alien empire that wants to destroy the planet Earth by employing the Orbital Buster, a large space satellite similar to the Death Star.
The game features six stages to complete, each with their own boss battles. It also features two game modes, Game Center integration, and two control types. One control type allows you to control your ship with a virtual joystick and places the game inside of an arcade box, while the other features a strip on the left-hand side of the screen where you can simply drag your finger to control your ship. Although the strip is rather large, it doesn't actually affect the gameplay since the game retains its original 4:3 ratio.
Like most retro games, Earth Defense Force will likely appeal to those who played and thoroughly enjoyed the original, or those who simply prefer their games in the 16-bit range.
Earth Defense Force is now available in the App Store for the introductory price of $1.99. Check it out if you want to take a trip down memory lane.
