Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary App Now Available
January 4, 2011
Carrying around a dictionary has never been cool. Now the folks behind the Merriam-Webster line of dictionaries and thesauri have released a free app that helps make finding words easier than ever.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary app includes over 225,000 definitions from the Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, and 300,000 synonyms and antonyms from the brand's Collegiate Thesaurus.
You can search for words using a built-in voice search. This is powered by the popular Dragon Voice recognition technology. Through multiple tests, I found this functionality worked flawlessly.
You can also search for words by typing out the beginning of a word in the search box. The app automatically gives you a list of words that might match your criteria.
The app also includes a Word of the Day feature, which is a nice addition.
The app is ad-supported, but don’t let this concern you. The ads aren’t intrusive, and if this is what it takes for the app to be free, so be it. Other Merriam-Webster apps on the market sell for $24.99, so this is a real deal.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary app is for the iPhone/iPod touch and is available in the App Store.
