Gruber: iPad 2 Won't Include Retina Display

January 20, 2011
One of the big unknowns regarding the upcoming second generation iPad is whether or not it will include a higher resolution display. MacRumors has concluded that a Retina display is coming for Apple’s larger device. However, John Gruber has poured cold water on this. Posting on his Daring Fireball website, Gruber concludes after talking to “(his) sources, it is too good to be true.” The iPad 2’s resolution will remain at 1024 x 768. For proof, Gruber says that UI images in iOS 4.3 beta 1 are only at the 1024 x 768 resolution. If Apple were to make a change this late in the game, developers would be at a loss and not have enough time to reformat app graphics for a higher resolution. Of course, no one knows for sure. “Sources” provide lots of different information and some never pans out. The iPad 2 is expected to be released sometime in 2011.
