Review: Dead Space - Console Experience On iOS?

January 31, 2011
Immerse yourself in the world of Dead Space as EA has transferred the console game to iOS. The game fits in between the original Dead Space storyline, and the brand new sequel with a story built just for iOS. You traverse through corridors traveling further into the darkness in the Mines of Titan, and facing more of the Necromorph enemy. The iOS version takes the best of the console version, and delivers it in a great package for a mobile device. With the game so close to your face it is extremely immersive to truly deliver the building tension and creepy feel the series is known for. You are for the most part in empty corridors just hearing the echoing of your footsteps, until there is the shock factor when an enemy pops out of nowhere, and is right in your face. Dead Space may be EA's most technically advanced offering to date with such detailed graphics which further show what iOS devices are capable of. There are great lightning effects for great definition in the environment and truly shrouds you in darkness to heighten the unknown as you progress in the mines. The soundtrack is somewhat sparse adding to the silence of space, but the sound effects interrupt so well. Dead Space is an entire experience that provides adventure while offering up chills and scares especially when playing alone in the dark. The storyline isn't the most deluxe you'll see, but still fits nicely between the two console versions, though it doesn't really stand on its own. One concern is that there are in-app purchases on top of the $6.99 process tag to level your player up faster. The weapon arsenal is unique with saws and razors instead of the typical guns. There are multiple upgrades for everything including your suit which has the ability to slow down an enemy. There are distant attacks, and always that up close and personal attack, and all the controls are very intuitive for iOS. The game lacks social connectivity so that there is no online play, and the included achievements are only stored on the device, and not on a system like Game Center. Dead Space does become somewhat repetitive as the enemies repete often, and so do the killing animations. A really nice addition is that if you get stuck, you can use your suit to show you the right direction to go which is especially helpful with all the forks in the corridors. Dead Space is a great addition to the App Store that does the franchise proud, and is worth picking up for $6.99.
