Sony Releases Disappointing PlayStation App

January 12, 2011
Sony has quietly released its first official PlayStation app for the iPhone/iPod touch. The free app is available now in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. It is expected to be released in other countries later this year.

The PlayStation app focuses heavily on advertising PlayStation titles and giving users the ability to tell others about them. It is slightly more than a marketing gimmick. What is missing is the ability to actually play games. The app allows you to:
  • Check out your PlayStation Network trophies and keep up to date with your friends’ games and online status.
  • Discover all the latest games, news and hardware for your PlayStation 3, PSP and PlayStation 2.
  • Read all the announcements on the European PlayStation Blog.
  • Share your favorite products or news with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or via e-mail.

This news will certainly underwhelm many, but perhaps the app's release is just the first in a series of steps. Perhaps one day soon, PlayStation games will be available via the app. Or, maybe not. What do you think? Are you excited or underwhelmed about this release? Leave your comments below.
