Verizon iPhone Comes With Wi-Fi Hotspot Capability

January 11, 2011
Here's a surprise: At Verizon's special iPhone launch event a few moments ago, Verizon announced that the iPhone 4 coming to its network will pack one particularly interesting additional functionality; Wi-FI tethering for up to five devices. That's right, with the iPhone 4 on Verizon, you'll be able to create a mobile Wi-Fi network directly from your iPhone, and share its data connection with up to five devices at the same time. However, there is one catch, as you're using a CDMA network, your connection will be interrupted if you take a call. Nevertheless, this is an awesome new feature. No word on pricing however. Of course, that brings up one major question, what about the current iPhone on AT&T or other carriers? Well, we don't know yet. The Wi-Fi hotspot functionality most likely depends on software, so we assume Apple could make it a standard on all of its phones, if the carriers agree. AT&T most likely won't be too happy about this, but I'd feel pretty confident about the rest of the world. Anyway, this is great news, and we'll tell you more about it as soon as we find out.
