Defend Your Ship In This Intergalactic Space Battle
Paddle Battle ($2.99) by Keeple is an intergalactic battle between you and your friends. The game requires two players and has multiple game modes. The modes vary from arcade style action to infinite mayhem. The objective is simple; you must defend your side from destruction and ultimately protect your ship.
The game starts with two balls that bounce back and forth, however in between the sides are asteroids. There are always a few balls in play; some of the power-ups allow you to put even more balls in play. Each side has a wall of defense; the objective is to destroy the opponent’s wall to reach their ship. The user has a paddle that is about a 1/5 the size of your wall; this can be dragged from side to side to defend yourself from attacks. There are two ways of winning. Either destroy the wall and directly attack the ship until your opponent dies. Or, when time runs out whoever has taken less damage wins.
The controls are simple, little pods can be collected and give the user power-ups and items to launch. Once an item is highlighted, a fire button launches it.
The game combines aspects from the old classic “Pong” and incorporates a more futuristic intergalactic feel with rockets and a space theme. However, it is very disappointing that there is no single player mode. The game would be more fun if it didn’t require two players.
Game play is very smooth for the most part; the only thing that seemed to lag a little was the paddle that slides back and forth. This is also used to launch and aim objects, perhaps in a future update it will become more responsive.
Overall Paddle Battle can be a very intense intergalactic war, if you can convince someone to play with you. Though the game boasts weapons and power-ups of all sorts, the lack of a single player mode is its downfall.
