Alphabet Board ($1.99) by EVO App Labs, Inc. is an interactive way to learn how to write using the iPad. It uses Montessori’s methods to teach children the alphabet. The app teaches students D’Nealian (print) and cursive letters, in both lower and uppercase. In addition, the app includes background music and phonetic sounds associated with each letter. The user has the option of being shown how to write the letter step by step, hear it, and also erase previous attempts. In theory the features included in this app can replace a teacher for a student learning the alphabet.

The app is filled with very innovative features for children. The “hear it” function has the voice of another child saying the letter, the sound it makes, and also a word that begins with the letter. These are the things our teachers did with us as children, now they can be done conveniently on an iPad.

The app lets users switch between upper and lower case, as well as D’Nealian and cursive. Each of these variations has a separate diagram for students to attempt writing the letter. The letters are presented in a writing paper format, similar to what children practice on in school. The user will also find a “show me” option which indicates where to begin the letter and where to finish with simple numbers and arrows.

Overall I don’t think there is a single negative thing about Alphabet Board. For an education facility, or for parents teaching their children the alphabet, this is a must have app. It is very simple to understand and it's user friendly. I can definitely envision our education system utilizing software like this in our school systems.
