Aggregate All Of Your Photos In One Place With Photopod

February 24, 2011

Photopod ($1.99) by Dear Future Astronaut AB is an app that gives you access to all your photos stored across multiple places in one single location.

Isn't it nice to have access to all your photos on your device, Flickr, Twitter (through TwitPic), Picasa, Dropbox, and Facebook all in one place? Well, with Photopod, it's now possible.

Photopod allows you to log in to various services to get access to your photos stored on that particular service. All your logged in services will appear in an accordion-like listing in the main screen, along with the device Camera Roll (unfortunately not your Pictures folders or iPhoto library).

If there are images in the service, the text will be displayed in white. If there are none, the text will be grayed out. There is a button to refresh the photo data and an upload button at the top. Tapping on a service will expand it (if you have photosets in Flickr, set names will appear).

Once you get to a folder or set, the images will appear as thumbnails below. Selecting an image will bring you to a full screen view, where you can upload the photo to another service, download the photo, view photo details, rotate or crop the image. Any changes to the image can be undone/redone by shaking the device.

Additionally, photos can be uploaded from the main screen by the Upload button at the top of the accordion. You can select multiple photos and they should be uploaded in the background as you do other stuff in the app. You can view your uploading queue via the middle tab in the bottom menubar.

Looking for a particular photo? There's even a search function in Photopod that allows you to search through all your images in the cloud, as long as they have a title or something in the description to match what you're looking for.

The idea for Photopod is a really great one. The design and look of the app is great as well, but I am having major issues with the app.

First, I have several thousand images on my nearly-4-year-old Flickr account. Then add the 1,600 I currently have on my Camera Roll. That's a lot of images, yes? Therefore, I'm experiencing a ton of lag in Photopod as well. So much lag that I am experiencing constant crashing and lag times of over 15 seconds to do anything. Because of the lagging and crashing, the app is almost unusable for me.

Another thing to note is that for Twitter, the app only pulls from Twitpic. Not everyone on Twitter uses Twitpic. There are several other image uploading services for Twitter, such as YFrog, Plixi, img.ly, and others. It would be nice if the app included these services as well, and even others, like Posterous, Tumblr, and Instagram.

I really hope that the developer addresses this issue with large photo libraries because I can't be the only one out there that has accumulated a lot of photos over time. If this problem can be fixed, I would love the app, because the concept is pretty great.

But until then, unless you don't have a lot of photos, I can't fully recommend Photopod. However, it is definitely a unique app and has the potential.

My advice: if you have big photo collections, just put this app on your wish list. Small collection? Check it out.

NOTE: Developer says that fixes are underway and should be deployed in about two weeks.
