Split Payments Fairly With Splitter

February 22, 2011

Splitter ($9.99) by Serpensoft Group is an app to help split the check between multiple people.

There will be times when you will go out with friends and family and have a nice meal together, or go shopping together. There will be a time at some point where you combine the totals together and figure out how much you owe later. Well, Splitter is here to help you with those calculations.

The app opens up into what resembles a calculator. A button in the bottom corner will have an icon of people on it, and this is where you need to first go. It will take you to a list of names that are pulled from your Address Book.

Select your names from the list to be added to a check. They will be recognized with a glowing, blue checkmark. The circle at the bottom left of the menubar will clear all selected names so you can start anew. There is a magnifying glass to represent the Search function, in case you don't want to scroll through your large address book.

When you have all the names, tapping the "Done" button will take you back to the calculator-like screen. You'll see the names at the top and you can scroll between them to input an amount for each person using the keypad. The keypad is nice, since it does have basic math functions and a percentage button, so you can do calculations without needing to exit the app.

Once an amount is entered for each person, a total will be displayed at the bottom, along with the average amount, if your group wants to put in an equal amount for the total.

This information can also be emailed out to all parties involved, which is nice if they want a record or something to keep track of. Other than that, it's nothing great or special.

Unfortunately, the app doesn't do tip separately, and you can't really add any more details to each person (like what they got). Splitter only allows users to input amounts to figure out how to split a check equally.

Other than being well designed, Splitter is lacking. At least with other apps, like Bistromath, you can enter details for each individual as well as calculate tip from the total. I was also irked as I found an iAd floating above the contact list on my first use, and randomly disappearing and coming back again. Since this is originally a paid app, I expect no ads whatsoever.

For the current price of free, Splitter is decent if you want to split a payment equally among your peers. Otherwise (and when the price tag returns), I'd skip it and look elsewhere.
