It’s an alien invasion, and you need to blast away those alien bugs. In Bugs Wars you travel around saving stranded humans from the bug invaders. As you travel, more exotic bugs come at you. Thankfully you get some awesome weaponry to send them back to their home planet.
The alien bugs direct their attacks at the stranded humans, and come at them from 180 degrees. The game is rendered in 3D from the backgrounds to the bugs allowing for layers of enemies. To deal with the bugs you’re given a rather innovative control method.
You drag one finger to aim, and tap the other on the firing button. It really is point and shoot, and it feels just perfect on the touch screen. With such an easy control scheme you can handle the load of alien bugs. Each level gives you waves of varying enemies, and you try to keep the humans alive.
There’s never a chance to rest, and each new level introduces a new enemy. For each new enemy you’re also given a new weapon type. Soon you’ll have a whole arsenal, and you’ll need to flip through them quickly to have the right gun for the right bug. The main constant is that there are always a lot of bugs. You need to choose quickly which ones to begin shooting at.
You’ll soon be over run if you have a couple missed shots, or are not using the right gun. This occurs over and over again because there are so many levels. You are mired in a constant stream of bugs across 24 levels for each of the four difficulties. Though it’s just a shooter, there is a surprising amount of variation with the number of enemy and weapon types.
No level plays the same, and you never know what the next one will hold. There are multiple boss battles along the way to amp up the challenge. It’s enjoyable blasting through all kinds of alien bugs with different guns. Also, every weapon and enemy bug kill has a different animation. There is a deluxe destruction engine so each enemy is blown to pieces in a unique way.
You see a new background after every couple of levels, though no new gameplay elements are added. It still establishes the notion that you’re actually progressing. There are even special levels where you need to survive until the air strike arrives. Game Center and Crystal are included for online high scores and achievements to show your bug killing prowess.
Bugs Wars ($1.99, Universal) is a new breed of shooter with it’s innovative and well made control scheme. The game allows for tons of enemies on screen because you can handle it with the control method. It’s just as fun to play as it is to watch the superb graphics engine, and non stop alien bug blasting.
Bugs Wars is a should buy for $1.99 that is an upper echelon iOS shooter.
