Review: Mummys Treasure - Don't Let The Treasure Drop

February 7, 2011
Rather than going treasure hunting and trying to find it, the treasure is presented right in front of you, and you need to save it from falling into the abyss. In each level of Mummys Treasure (Universal, $0.99) you're given a puzzle arrangement where you need to rid the screen of mummies, but keep all the gold. You tap to remove platforms, and let gravity do the rest for the mummy and skeleton heads to fall off the screen, and try to get the gold to catch on other platforms. Now these aren't like the casual puzzles that are proliferating the App Store today, and are definitely on the challenging side. They become as tough as breaking into an actual Pharaoh's tomb across the 60 included levels. You begin relatively simple removing certain platforms with the right timing, but then you reach levels where certain pieces have shifted gravity, and there are more expansive levels that require you to scroll the screen to see the whole thing. Every single puzzle presents a different challenge, and requires a different strategy so this is definitely a thinking person’s game. Timing is probably the most important factor as you need to remove pieces at just the right time to save the gold pieces, and let the mummy and skeleton pieces drop. Since timing is so important, and there is so much challenge you will need to replay a lot, and thankfully you can restart a level nearly instantaneously to get right back at it. There is a lot of replayability just in trying to beat each level, and you can go back for gold by beating a level in par or fewer moves. The game is definitely unique in the style of puzzle, and it has a great Egyptian theme that is intertwined so well throughout. There is a great art style with very fine detail, though the sounds are severely lacking, and are practically non existent. The game may be a little bit too tough for some players, so just know what you're getting into as this isn't the casual style puzzle. It is unremarkable, and doesn't seem to stick out of the crowded 300,000 apps as it does everything well, but nothing special. Yet, Mummys Treasure is a high quality challenging puzzle game that is worth picking up for $0.99.
