Review: Toki Tori HD - Laying The Golden Egg?

Can you help the chick Toki Tori collect all the eggs as it travels from the forest, to the haunted castle, slimy sewers, and even underwater? Toki Tori HD (iPad, $4.99) is a puzzle platformer unlike any other that is very high on the puzzle side. The eggs are placed on various platforms throughout the level, and you need to mind gaps, enemies, and the special power-ups you have.
Toki Tori has received the HD treatment for the iPad, and now shows most if not every level at once as compared to the constant scrolling to see everything on the iPhone. Other than that the versions are practically the same with 80 levels across four environments. The iPad version introduces special sections for hard and bonus levels that you unlock as you go, though you can use wildcards if you are severely stuck on a particular level.
Toki Tori really gives challenging a whole new meaning, and is a game where you don't just slam forward, but think about your path before ever making a move. This is the thinking person's platformer as there are still the enemies, gaps, and special items, but then you have to really think about every move. Each new environment introduces a new ability so that you can build bridges, transport, freeze enemies, swap bricks, suck up slugs, and more.
After the first five levels, most of the time you will be stuck, scratching your head, or completely lost if not all three. With that noted, replayability is high to actually make it through all 80 challenging levels, though frustration may prevent some from continuing. There is no doubt you can be discouraged, but if you take your time, and really think about the right order to move and use items you can beat any level.
It's a yeoman's effort to do it, but once you complete the levels it feels like a great accomplishment. Crystal is included for online high scores and achievements, but not Game Center. Toki Tori is absolutely bursting with polish which seems to be oozing out of every pixel like the slime oozing out of the sewer levels.
The colorful art design and the various animations on top of the polish live up to the HD moniker. There is a great soundtrack with multiple songs across the different environments. The rewind feature is a great addition so that you can go back on one wrong move with just a tap, or more moves if necessary.
Toki Tori HD is a great addition to the iPad game catalog that gives you a wider perspective, and very challenging puzzle platformer gameplay. The game is worth it for $4.99 for iPad owners to experience. Note, there is no new content if you've completed the game on your iPhone or iPod Touch.
*The video below is of the Mac App Store version of Toki Tori which is just like the iPad version, and if you're interested in Toki Tori on the Mac, everything above relates to it as well.
