Must-Have: Talkatone Google Voice VoIP Client App Gets A Brand New Interface
February 27, 2011
Google Voice is an amazing service, and it's growing in popularity. However, one of its main downsides is that, for all intents and purposes, it's not really a full VoIP solution. Of course, it will let you place free calls from Gmail in the browser, to any US number, but the official Google Voice app only redirects you to your phone, and won't save you minutes. Not to mention that your incoming calls are only redirected to a real number.
Talkatone alleviates the issue, by being the only app that allows you to use Google Voice as a real VoIP solution. It lets you place and receive calls from your iPhone, but using only your data connection, directly through Google's servers. It works in the background like Skype, and the quality is really good. It also fully supports Bluetooth handsets. Yes, all it requires is a Gmail account with calling activated, or a Google Voice account, and it will work just fine from overseas. It also includes Gtalk messaging, and even integrates with GV connect.
It's ad-sponsored, but you have the option to get rid of the ads by subscribing to the premium service, in app, for $1.99/month or $19.99/year. The premium version also supports multiple accounts, personalized wallpapers and custom ringtones. All that's left to wish for is text message support.
To give it more punch, its developers have just released an update giving the app a brand new, redesigned interface. The look of the previous version was lacking, and this update will certainly propel Talktone to the top of the App Store.
Talkatone is a hidden gem in the App Store. If you haven't yet, make sure to check it out. It's free (with ads), and a heck of an app.
