Tower Assault Curse Of Zombie Island: More Fun Than A Cannon Full Of Brains

Tower Assault! Curse of Zombie Island HD ($2.99) by Rogue Pirate Ninja Interactive, LLC is an atypical strategy game. Instead of the the traditional tower defense gameplay, it is finally your turn to tear those towers down. The concept is simple, if absurd, as your crew is stricken by a zombie curse. To motivate your zombie crew, you shoot brains out of cannons. The player attempts to thwart the plans of the island's resident witch doctor, who is the one that cursed your crew in order to steal your treasure.

The game actually has a plot slightly longer than a single sentence, which is a rarity in casual games these days. The gameplay is simple, and has hints of physics to it: you shoot brains out of cannons. That is effectively the extent of your actions as leader of this undead horde. I feel the game loses a sense of depth in its primary gameplay component, as elsewhere in the game there are elements of greater immersion: you have to build your horde size, and harvest brains from the skulls of your slain enemies, all while maneuvering around the map ever mindful of the enemy's position.

The game does have a little something for everyone, a casual drag and drop gameplay approach, a map for strategic maneuvering, and zombies. This game has the hallmark of being designed by hardcore gamers trying to make a foray into the casual game arena. And, in many ways, they've succeeded. The game isn't a classic, an instant hit, or a must have. It isn't the most polished game in the App Store, but it doesn't have to be, with over 40 levels involved, it's well worth the price of admission.
