Popular PBS Civil War Documentary Free In App Store For Limited Time

March 25, 2011
The first episode of Civil War, the 1990 Ken Burns documentary, is streaming free on the PBS app for the iPhone/iPod touch and iPad, according to Pad Gadget. It is also available as a free download in the App Store. The episode’s availability, which coincides with the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, will run through April 4. According to John F. Wilson, SVP & Chief TV Programming Exectuive at PBS:
The Civil War remains the highest rated series for PBS, and it was a milestone in the history of documentary film and television. Twenty-one years after its premiere, the re-mastered film continues to be relevant and gripping. We’re thrilled to present this 19th century story, so riveting and critical to our country’s history, by using 21st century technology.”
The PBS apps, which were released late last year, offer 250 hours of free video options, including many PBS Kids programming. The Civil War series will air in its entirety nationally on the PBS network beginning Sunday, April 3, and run through Thursday, April 7, from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. You can also purchase the series on iTunes for $39.92. The free PBS iPhone/iPod touch and iPad apps are available in the App Store.
