The Upcoming iPhone 5 Could Be Going “Back To The Future”
March 7, 2011
The iPhone 5 might include an aluminum backside and lack the side antennas, which plagued the current handset. These rumors were first reported by Taiwan’s Economic Daily News, and translated by GadgetsDNA.com.
According to the report, the iPhone 5 will look very similar to the existing fourth generation iPod touch, which was released in September 2010. Gone will be the device’s current glass backside, to be replaced with aluminum, which was first used on the original iPhone in 2007.
While the iPhone 4’s glass design is impressive, some users have reported problems with scratching or shattering. These problems could be eliminated with a more durable (and probably lighter) aluminum design.
In addition, the report concludes that the current antenna design will be scrapped. Instead of being placed on the side of the device, like with the current iPhone 4, the antenna of the next device will be located just behind the Apple logo on the back.
The iPhone 5 will also include the same multi-processor of the iPad 2; the A5.
The validity of these rumors is suspect at best. First, Apple is unlikely to pivot back to a previous design for its top selling product. Second, in moving the antenna, Apple would be admitting its iPhone 4 design was flawed. Would they really want to do this, and face the questions this decision would cause?
In my opinion, Apple would be taking a U-turn with this design.
