Vermeer HD: This Is How You Want To View A Pearl Earring

March 11, 2011

Vermeer HD ($1.99) by overdamped is an art app done the way it should to be. It’s the newest of a number of art titles from this publisher that uses iOS to its fullest advantage.

Vermeer HD, like all their other single artist apps, is the gold standard for this genre, especially on the iPad. All their apps are universal, and wonderful on the iPhone 4’s Retina display too.

Nothing is overlooked in this package.

The content is excellent. This is a comprehensive collection of genuinely HD photographs. The paintings look almost as good on the iPad as they would in person, and no museum is ever going to let you get a closer look.

Particularly famous works link in-app to relevant Wikipedia articles.

The app provides all the basic info on the works, things like titles, dates, and mediums. Nothing is forced on you; you can see each work with no text too, if that's your preference.

The GUI is phenomenal. The start menu is a delight. Works are divided into periods with images for easy reference.

The viewing possibilities are many, varied and well planned. The app even provides detailed close-ups of the most famous works, like Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring. And, the closeups can be zoomed; you can see every crack in the paint!

You can interact with the app, or enjoy a passive slideshow.

The thought put into every detail is extraordinary; each gallery is accompanied by a specifically chosen work of classical music to match the mood.

You can browse the galleries and works in any order, and there is a gallery just for your favorites.

You can save images to your iDevice's photo gallery, and it’s easy to share paintings by e-mail.

If you are a Vermeer aficionado buy this app. If not, but you love art, check out the overdamped Artists HD series. They have a large and expanding catalog of art from around the world and even take requests. The developers are art lovers who want to share their passion. Cezanne HD and Van Gogh HD are my favorites.

Vermeer HD is the best type of art app. It’s a fantastic study tool, gives users a museum-like experience, and is a must-have for any culture seeker.
