Apple Beats Projections (Again!) With Q2 Earnings Call

In true Apple form, the electronics giant again beat most industry estimates with its 2011 Q2 financial report released minutes ago. The numbers continue to astound, surging at full sail even in a generally sagging world economy. Mac sales, at 3.76 million units, are up 28 percent year-over-year, while a whopping 18.65 million iPhones and 9.02 million iPods were sold. While the iPod continues to shrink in demand (down 17 percent), these figures represent an increase in sales of Apple's flagship device of over 110 percent from a year ago. The company's other flagship product, the iPad, saw sales of 4.69 million units this quarter. Considered by many to be short of projected figures, this can likely be explained away by the then-impending launch of the iPad 2. (The Japanese tsunami should not factor heavily into these figures, as that crisis would have no impact on original iPad production, and the financial quarter in question ended only two weeks after the tsunami could have disrupted the supply chain.) In all, Apple set quarterly records with $24.67 billion in revenue making for a take-home $5.99 billion, equating to $6.40 per diluted share. This represents an increase of $11.17 billion in revenue over this time last year, and, amazingly, almost double the net profit! Apple Reports Second Quarter Results Record March Quarter Drives 83 Percent Revenue Growth, 95 Percent Profit Growth Record iPhone Sales Grow 113 Percent CUPERTINO, California—April 20, 2011—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2011 second quarter ended March 26, 2011. The Company posted record second quarter revenue of $24.67 billion and record second quarter net profit of $5.99 billion, or $6.40 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $13.50 billion and net quarterly profit of $3.07 billion, or $3.33 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 41.4 percent compared to 41.7 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 59 percent of the quarter’s revenue. Apple sold 3.76 million Macs during the quarter, a 28 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 18.65 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 113 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 9.02 million iPods during the quarter, representing a 17 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.
