Bejewelled + Tetris: Blockslide
Blockslide ($0.99) by Pekka Vilpponen follows in the steps of the successful Tetris empire, but adds its own twists and challenges.
Blockslide is a puzzle/strategy game that gives players three different options of gameplay: classic, puzzle and arcade. At the beginning of each mode, there is a helpful tutorial. Each mode offers lots of levels to conquer and unlock.
What's the point? A series of blocks slowly slide down the screen in organized lines (two rows at a time). You must use your finger to position them where you want them and let them fall to the floor. Line up three or more to get them to disappear. At the beginning of classic and puzzle mode, you are asked to destroy a certain number of blocks before you can beat that particular level.
The blocks fall in straight lines and there is no swapping out (as in Bejewelled). Although there are many similarities to the previously mentioned games, I'm glad Blockslide does set itself apart.
The levels are challenging. The game sucked me in and I played longer than I expected to. I particularly enjoyed the classic mode. This is a great game for gamers who love puzzles.
The music has an old school arcade feel to it. The game does too, but the graphics are polished.
I do wish there was a way to immediately drop blocks once you have them where you want them. Waiting for them to tick down slowly does get old after a while.
The indie developer of this game is eager to hear feedback and no doubt this will produce wonderful updates in the future. I really hope to see an HD iPad version in the future.
