Not So Fast Sony: OmniVision Set To Release New 12.6 Megapixel Camera Unit

April 15, 2011
Just weeks after rumors surfaced that Sony would provide cameras for the iPhone 5, a new development might make Apple rethink that strategy. According to Electronista, OmniVision, which supplies the back-illuminated CMOS sensor found in the iPhone 4’s backside camera, demoed an amazing new sensor, the OV12825. Could the iPhone 5's delay work to OmniVision's advantage? Santa Clara, California-based OmniVision’s new sensor includes 12.6 megapixels and is fast enough to push high quality video. In addition, it records 1080p video at 60 frames per second. Plus, the OV12825 is said to capture still images with 4224 x 3000 resolution at 15 frames per second. Best of all, the sensor is expected to enter production sometime this spring. On April 2, Sony CEO Howard Stringer suggested to The Wall Street Journal his company would provide camera parts for the iPhone 5. At the time, an 8 megapixels camera was expected. With the iPhone 5 likely delayed until September, this could be the opening OmniVision needs to remain Apple’s camera supplier. What do you think? Leave your comments below.
