Future Apple Devices Could Be Made From Carbon Fiber - Report
April 11, 2011
Apple might replace aluminum, stainless steel, and glass with carbon fiber in future products, according to news first reported by 9 To 5 Mac. This conclusion was drawn by Apple’s recent hire of an expert in the field, plus a recent patent request.
According to 9 To 5 Mac, Apple has long been experimented with carbon fiber, which is lighter and stronger than other materials. In fact, there were rumors earlier this year the iPad 2 would include this material. Although that proved incorrect, Apple might use it in future Macs or iDevices.
Kevin Kenney, who has worked with Apple as a consultant, was recently hired as the company’s new Senior Composites Engineer. Beforehand, he served as President & CEO at Kestrel Bicycles. In 2009, Apple filed a Carbon fiber patent with Kenney’s named attached, which is significant.
It will be fascinating to see when, or if an upcoming device includes carbon fiber.
