Kids Can Learn To Think Logically About Weather And How It Affects Daily Life

April 21, 2011

I Learn With Poko: Seasons and Weather! HD ($2.99) by Tribal Nova is a wonderfully polished app for kids. It was crafted with the help of educators, psychologists and professional developers. It's one of the best-looking kids apps I've seen and your children ages 3-7 will learn valuable lessons about weather, months of the year, days of the week and more.

If it's one thing I love, it's an educational app that helps kids learn to think critically. There are several features in I Learn With Poko: Seasons and Weather that help kids do just that.

There are three modes of play. The first mode asks kids to help Beebee fill up her photo album. Several photos pop up on screen and your child is asked to touch photos that fit the narrator's description. "Can you touch the pictures where the sun is shining?"

The next mode of play focuses on your child helping Poko and Beebee dress appropriately for the weather. A scene comes up and Beebee and Poko have articles of clothing on that do not match the weather. Your child needs to think critically to figure out what does not match and touch the items that don't.

The third level of play asks your child to figure out what kind of activity Poko probably did on a given day of the year (based on the month and the weather that day). Each level increases in difficulty, so this last one is geared more toward 6 and 7-year-olds.

The scenes are very colorful and the characters are animated. Tribal Nova is the same company that created PBS KIDS PLAY and it's very apparent that they know how to make a good app. I appreciate that they came up with the learning objectives and methods in this game using educators and psychologists.

Something I hope to see in a future update: I do wish Tribal Nova would have hired some child voice over actors to voice the kids. This would have added a more child-friendly element. Also, sometimes the current voice over tends to drag - my three year old got very impatient with him and would try answering questions before he was done asking.

Overall, this app is incredibly well done and enjoyable. I enjoyed testing it out with my three-year-old and will continue to use it to teach her about weather, the calendar and days of the week.
