Warbirds Spitfire ($5.99) by Simviu Technology Inc. simulates a WWII fighter plane battle with realistic graphics and a historically accurate story line. The game starts off with a brief introduction, and a journal entry from the war. Users play through a series of campaign missions that become progressively harder. Each mission has more enemies to defeat and sometimes more planes attacking you. Before each mission users are prompted with the option of playing a "real" battle or a "novice" one. These are your only options for adjusting the difficulty.

The main objective of every mission is to take down your selected targets. Usually they are flying all around you, and make it incredibly difficult to follow them. But, once you finally have a clear line of sight, defeating them isn’t too hard. The controls however do make it more challenging.

Users have two options, the traditional control pad with default plane controls, or the iDevices accelerometer. Of course using the accelerometer sounds like it would be more fun and interesting, but it isn’t very easy. I found myself struggling to control the plane in one direction and nearly impossible to continue flying.

When using the control pad it was even more complicated so I do recommend staying with the accelerometer. After several minutes of practice, controlling it becomes manageable. It works the same way real planes controls would. Tilting the device forward sends you towards the ground and pulling back will send you up towards the sky. Beware: holding any position for too long will turn your plane upside down in no time.

There are a few more controls, one for adjusting the rudder as well as a button for firing. Users also have the option of changing their view during the game, this allows you to get a feel for your surroundings or see where your enemies are.

Warbirds Spitfire is a great idea and can be a really fun game. I found the controls lag a little at times, and it is also very difficult to actually shoot down your enemies. For those who appreciate classic WWII games and plane battles this is worth looking into, but check out the lite version before purchasing the full game.
