Monster Rush ($0.99) by iDevMobile Tec. is an addictive pickup-and-play action game that takes after the popular title Fruit Ninja. The main goal is to slice monsters as they are fired onto the screen from three random canons. Players have three opportunities to miss a monster before it’s game over. However, developers wouldn’t be able to get away with copying a previous title so closely, unless they threw in an array of new features.

Of these features, players will find more than one object equivalent to Fruit Ninja’s “bomb.” They’ll find sticks of TNT and bottles of poison, which if you’re not careful enough will end your game immediately. In addition to new ways of dying, players will also encounter several ways of staying alive longer. Throughout the game boomerangs are launched in the air, each a different color. The colors signify the different power-ups equipped with each. Of these power-ups players will find invincibility, shock bars, double points, and much more.

At first I found gameplay on the iPhone to be very aggravating and cumbersome. There were too many objects to avoid, and no instructions as to what each object did. After several minutes I was able to determine what each object meant and what I needed to avoid. Though it would have been much more enjoyable, had simple instructions told me these things ahead of time.

Even after getting the hang of the game and understanding what all the power-ups meant, I still found the gameplay overwhelming and un-enjoyable. Fruit Ninja started off very simple and progressively became harder. It seems as if the developers failed to include this and instead have made the difficulty completely random.

Overall Monster Rush is nothing original but simply a poor overhaul of Fruit Ninja. Even with a few power-ups and new features it doesn’t compare at all. For players seeking a slice and dice experience, stick to the original Fruit Ninja.
