BlueNube Gives You The Complete CloudApp Experience On Your iPad

May 30, 2011

BlueNube ($1.99) by Fabio Morbec is a CloudApp client for the iPad that allows users to access and manage your files and links stored in the cloud.

When it comes to easy file and link sharing, my app of choice is CloudApp. I've been using it daily ever since it debuted last year. Why do I like CloudApp so much? Probably because it's fun to see how many times my files and links have been viewed (or not viewed, depending on how you see it). On my iPhone, I've been using Cloud2go. But what about the iPad, with it's larger screen estate and better browsing experience? Time to meet BlueNube.

BlueNube will prompt you for your account information with a beautiful login screen. Once you are in your account, you can access your Drops. In Portrait view, the Drops will appear in a drop-down menu; in Landscape, the screen will be split into two panes, with the Drops on the left.

The Drops menu categorizes all of the files that you have put into CloudApp. The categories are: Images, Videos, Audios, Archives, Bookmarks, Text, and Others. Selecting any category will allow you to view all of your files in that category, along with the statistics on how many times a file has been clicked.

Selecting a file will allow you to view it. Bookmarks, images, PDFs, and other simple files will be viewed as you would expect them to. Videos and audio files will be played using the native iOS QuickTime player. Unfortunately, while archive files (like .zip) can be viewed in BlueNube, they cannot be opened.

Now, you're probably thinking, "Ok, big deal. What else can it do besides let me view old stuff?" BlueNube also allows you to upload media directly to your CloudApp account. This is done by tapping on the button on the top menubar with the cloud and up arrow. You can select an image and the app will automatically start uploading it. The CloudApp URL will automatically be copied to your device clipboard once it's complete.

While you're viewing any file or link, you can Share it by email, Read It Later (unfortunately, no Instapaper support), Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or "More" services and actions. Files can also be opened in another third party app that supports the file format.

While I'm pretty satisfied with using this for my CloudApp client on my iPad, I'm a bit disappointed that there is support for Read It Later but not Instapaper. I prefer Instapaper and would like to see this service be supported in addition to RIL in a future update.

If you're a CloudApp fan with an iPad, then give BlueNube a try. The interface is slick and simple, and gives you all the basic features you'd expect and more.
