Get Tons Of Scratched Up Possibilities With ScratchCam

May 5, 2011

ScratchCam ($1.99) by Luna's Edge will help grunge up any photo on your iPhone by applying a variety of scratch effects.

Even though we're in the age of digital photography, it seems that making your photos look trashed and destroyed or like the good old analog days is all the rage these days. It helps with the plethora of iPhone apps out there that do this very thing.

Now, we normally don't like our physical photos to be scratched up, right? But digitally, scratches can add a unique effect to our photos, and make any ordinary photo look a bit more exciting. With ScratchCam, that's exactly what you get.

ScratchCam opens up to a blank screen on the initial launch, but you're free to capture a new image or use one from your iPhone's Photo Library.

When you have the image, it's time to have fun by seeing what the image will look like when it's scratched up. The app will show you a random scratch effect, but if you aren't satisfied by it, you can hit the refresh button in the bottom right corner to see a different effect.

There are many effects that will give your photo a good or bad look. They can range from B&W filters to colored ones, and some also add in various styles of grungy borders. But they all have scratches in them in one way or another.

When you stumble across a particular effect that you like, you can save it to your Camera Roll or share it on Flickr and Facebook.

ScratchCam does support several resolutions, which are configurable in the Settings (look for that 'i'). Images can be saved in 800px, 1200px, or Original. As I always do, I immediately hit Original for the best quality. The Settings are also where you want to go for configuring your photo sharing logins.

If you ever quit the app and come back to it, the app will remember the last image you were working with, which is great if you were interrupted by a call or something more important.

ScratchCam is simple and easy to use. However, I think that there should be some type of filter preview so you can quickly take a look at the different effects instead of going through them one-by-one. Twitter support should also be added.

If you like the idea of making your photos look "grunged" up, then ScratchCam is a great tool to add to your toolbox of iPhone photo apps. There are tons of possibilities waiting for you in this simple, $2 app.
