Quirky App Of The Day: Pound It

May 9, 2011
I will admit completely to my status as a complete social idiot in high school. I had little sense in the ways of flirtation, subtlety, or just basic humor and insight. I'm getting some dividends now that I write up reviews about apps that most people would have the maturity to just ignore, but other than that, I'm still just a dork. As Bill Engval so eloquently explains, I'm always just 15 degrees off cool. However, I have my moments where I can tell that there's something not quite right with the social picture. It's akin to finding Waldo at Waldo's funeral and realizing just as you're opening your mouth that you probably shouldn't yell, "Found him!" So, when even my social senses are tingling, I know that something is amiss, probably glaringly so to others. Pound It did indeed send those little vibrations down my spine while I fiddled around with it. The point of the app is to give yourself a fist pound. The screen shows a fist, and you tap yours onto it. Then, you see an explosion and another fist pops up. That's still considered to be somewhat geeky, right? I'm not getting a false reading, am I? This sort of sounds like giving myself a high-five. Believe me, I've had my fair share of being left hanging high and dry. So, I'm sensitive to whether or not I can go ahead and relieve the achy feeling in my hand where the contact of human skin should have been with a bit of my own. I just can't bring myself to believe that an app on the iPhone can fill the void. I'm sure the developer meant well. He even put in explosions after you touch the screen. It's still a poor substitute for a human being. I don't think it has nearly so much to do with having another person's hand make contact with mine as it is having a person there to witness the event. If it were actually making physical contact, then I would be in poor shape because I miss all the time. Gauge by the elbow for a high-five, but I'm not sure what to gauge by for with a fist pound. If the developer figures out an app for that, I would gladly pay the $0.99 for the information. It would prevent humiliation. Pound It is available at iTunes for $0.99
